I first delved into comics during that Onslaught arc (I guess I can call it that). I remember seeing the heroes - the non-mutants - 'sacrificing' themselves and such. Then a while later there was this love triangle of sorts between Joseph, Gambit and Rogue and then they went to space to fight the Phalanx and after that I stopped reading, only to pick it up later when Maggot, Reyes and Marrow were part of the X-Men. Well, Joseph was no longer that so I always wondered whether he was Magneto or just a clone? Maybe a lost son?

He was a clone. He sacrificed himself (apparently dying) to repair a planet-scale electromagnetic event crafted by Magneto.
